Short Story: Hasta La Vista, Baby

I am a huge fan of sci-fi movies and I have always wondered what an apocalyptic world would be like. What if machines gained enough power to trap the minds and bodies of all humans, conquering the world and putting an end to civilization as we know it? "Hasta la vista, baby", the famous movie line from Terminator 2, delivered 20 years ago, still sounds like the perfect goodbye to many things we used to take for granted.

Few people realize that what used to be considered sci-fi in the past, became a reality and most of us can feel the impact of social media in our lives. Machines have already taken over the world. The spread of fake news and missinformation on social networks have caused serious damages not only in political elections but also in interpersonal relationships, as we get to know what our neighbors, friends, relatives and co-workers think about delicate subjects such as racism, homophobia, sexism, misogyny, human rights, social inclusion, violence and, last but not least, hate speech disguised as “free speech”. The same tool used to unite people can incite conflicts and start a war. We are all being judged on daily basis. The number of likes, comments and shares is the new Final Judgement for humans who are hidden behind a computer.  

Considering the new perspectives  (or possibilities), all artists and art itself play an essential role in the current scenario. Throughout history and supported by the gods, artists have always been responsible for bringing light and reflection to society. The transforming power of art can renew, replace and redefine things that have no explanation but need to be felt anyway. Art can touch so many cold hearts and change so many forgotten lives. It is a form of love, and the wise use of technology, can take it to a whole new level, considerably increasing its range and social/ digital impact. 

The timeless mission of art is to revolutionize. On the streets, at museums and galleries, at theaters, exhibitions, demonstrations, in songs, movies, poems, videos, on posters, paintings, croquis and interventions, art means freedom and has the power to free even the closest minds.

Hasta La Vista, Baby!

Sou um grande fã de filmes de ficção científica e sempre imaginei como seria um mundo apocalíptico, no qual as máquinas conquistassem o poder e, consequentemente, aprisionassem as mentes e corpos da humanidade, assim dominando ou extinguindo aquilo que conhecemos como civilização. "Hasta la vista, baby", já nos dizia o Exterminador do Futuro há mais de 20 anos. 

O que poucos se dão conta é que isso já pode estar acontecendo agora mesmo, com a proliferação das fake news nas redes sociais e o impacto desastroso que elas têm causado, não somente nas eleições políticas, mas também nas relações interpessoais. Aliado a isso, ainda há o fato de que a internet, por meio das redes sociais, tem nos revelado o que alguns dos nossos vizinhos, amigos, familiares ou colegas de trabalho pensam sobre assuntos delicados como racismo, homofobia, machismo, misoginia, direitos humanos, inclusão social, uso de violência e, principalmente, discursos de ódio disfarçados de "liberdade de expressão". A rede digital que poderia unir, por outro lado, também pode afastar e até mesmo iniciar conflitos e guerras. Estamos todos sendo julgados diariamente, não pelo juízo final, mas sim por likes, comentários e compartilhamentos de humanos que se escondem atrás de máquinas. 

Diante desta perspectiva (ou possibilidade), cabe à arte e aos artistas desempenharem o imprescindível papel que a história e os deuses sempre lhes reservaram, que é o de trazer luz e reflexão para a sociedade. A arte tem o poder transformador de unir, resgatar e transmutar tudo aquilo que não pode ser explicado, mas sim, que precisa ser sentido. A arte pode tocar lugares e corações que há tempos estavam esquecidos ou adormecidos. A arte é o amor em movimento e, se usada com sabedoria, a tecnologia pode potencializar o seu alcance e também o impacto social/digital. 

A missão atemporal da arte é o da revolução, seja nas ruas, nos museus, nos protestos, nos filmes, nas galerias, nas canções, peças teatrais, poemas, textos, lambe-lambes, croquis, pinturas, vídeos, exposições ou intervenções artísticas. A arte é sempre libertadora e pode desaprisionar toda e qualquer mente.
