Questions for: Justin Bettman

Using decorative elements and discarded furniture, Justin Bettman, American artist based in California, created the Set in the Street project, where he elaborates photo sets in the streets of New York, Moscow and Berlin. The best part is: the public can interact with the artwork and shoot their own photos.

How do you describe your art?

My art always has a storytelling element to it, whether it’s a larger environmental scene or a studio portrait.

Where do you go and what do you see when you are seeking for inspiration?

Unfortunately I think inspiration is hard to find -  sometimes it comes to you, sometimes it doesn’t. But when I’m seeking inspiration, I try to exercise and escape the digital world to see where my mind goes.

Do you believe in today’s world everyone has the tools to become an artist if they wish?

Absolutely! It 's so amazing now what you can do with an iPhone, natural light, and good art direction. And now you can even do retouching on an iPad.  

How does living in New York influenced your art?

Living in NYC, I’m constantly stimulated and surrounded by culture. It’s pretty incredible how much art I’m exposed to, whether I’m actively seeking it out by going to a gallery, or whether I stumble upon street art on the side of a building.  

What most unusual material you’ve already found in the street?

 I found a fake deer head that can talk.  

What inspires your work?

Cinema and TV are two of my biggest inspirations. Ever since I started photography, I’ve always been drawn to light and how it’s used to lead the eyes of the viewers. I’ve borrowed numerous cinematic lighting techniques from motion and applied them to stills.  

What is your favorite series from your own work?

I’m really proud of my Set in the Street project.  

How long does it take you to produce one work? Can you tell me what your working process is like?

It can take anywhere from one week to a couple of months, depending on how focused I am on finding the materials and creating the set. Usually I go in with some sort of idea with what type of room I want to create, whether it’s a living room, dining room, bedroom, bathroom etc. Then I try to see what materials and furniture I can find that fit that room, which starts to inform the color palette. From there, I try to find smaller accessories that will work in the room and elevate the overall set design. At this point, I cast subjects and try to find wardrobe for them. Finally, I install the set in the middle of the night, shoot during sunrise, and then leave the set up for the public to interact with using the hashtag #SetintheStreet.

 What does art mean to you?

Creating something that causes an emotional reaction for the subject interacting with it. 

How can art change the world?

I don’t know if it can, but all we can do is try :)

Usando elementos de decoração e móveis descartados que encontra pelo caminho, o projeto Set in the Street, criado pelo artista californiano Justin Bettman, leva cenas comuns do dia a dia de uma casa para as ruas de Nova York, Moscou e Berlim. E o melhor:  o público pode usar o cenário para criar  suas próprias fotos.  

Como você descreve seu trabalho?

Minha arte tem sempre um elemento narrativo, seja em um ambiente maior, externo ou em um retrato de estúdio.

Que lugares você frequenta e o que gosta de ver quando está em busca de inspiração?

Infelizmente, acho que é difícil ter inspiração - às vezes ela vem, às vezes não. Mas quando quero me inspirar tento me exercitar e fugir do mundo digital, para ver onde minha mente me leva.

 Você acredita que no mundo atual todos têm ferramentas para se tornar um artista?

Com certeza! É tão incrível o que você pode fazer com um iPhone, luz natural e uma boa direção de arte. Hoje é possível fazer até retoques no iPad!

 Como viver em Nova York influenciou sua arte?

Como moro aqui, sou o tempo todo estimulado e cercado por cultura. É incrível a quantidade de arte a que estou exposto, quer esteja procurando por uma galeria ou quando me deparo com arte de rua ao lado de um prédio. 

Qual o material mais estranho que você já encontrou na rua?

Uma cabeça de veado falsa que fala!

 TV, música, cinema, o dia a dia... O que inspira seu trabalho?

Cinema e TV são duas das minhas maiores inspirações. Desde que comecei a fotografar, sempre fui atraído pela luz e como ela é usada para captar o olhar dos espectadores. Peguei “emprestadas” várias técnicas de iluminação do cinema e as apliquei nas fotos. 

Entre os trabalhos que já criou, qual o seu preferido?

Eu tenho muito orgulho de todo o projeto Set in the Street.  

Como é seu trabalho e quanto tempo você leva para produzir uma cena?

Pode demorar de uma semana a alguns meses, dependendo de como estou focado em encontrar os materiais e criar a cena. Geralmente já tenho uma ideia de que tipo de ambiente quero criar, seja uma sala de estar, de jantar, um quarto, um banheiro, etc. Então tento ver quais materiais e mobília consigo encontrar que se encaixem naquela sala e qual paleta de cores começa a se formar. A partir daí, tento encontrar acessórios menores que funcionem e elevem a ideia geral do conjunto que quero criar. Neste ponto, seleciono temas e tento encontrar um lugar para eles. Por fim, monto o cenário no meio da noite, fotografo durante o nascer do sol e depois deixo para o público interagir nas redes usando a hashtag #setinthestreet.

O que é arte para você?

Arte para mim é criar algo que cause uma reação emocional nas pessoas.  

Você acha que a arte pode mudar o mundo? 

Eu não sei se pode, mas tudo o que podemos fazer é tentar :).
