Questions for: Fe Cortez

Rio de Janeiro-born environmental activist Fe Cortez is the creator of Menos 1 Lixo platform, which promotes environmental education and discussions on sustainability, offering practical tips for day-to-day life. UN Defender of the Environment for the Clean Seas campaign, Cortez fights for a fairer world in harmony with our planet. 

Why is it so important to educate people about the trash problem?

There is a huge lack of education in Brazil and many other places in the world, and we still have a large number of functionally illiterate people. At the same time, industry spends billions on advertising, encouraging everyone to consume more and more, without educating them as to what will happen to all this trash afterwards. Garbage is a very serious environmental problem.  If we want life on the planet to flourish, we must rethink our habits and what happens post-consumption.  

What changes have you made in your life in favor of sustainability?

After I started studying the topic, I changed everything. The main change was in my profession: I became an environmental activist. My relationship with fashion also changed and I stopped believing in the look-of-the-day style and being a hostage to trends. I also transformed my eating habits by starting to buy my food from small producers, to consume organics and carry my reusable cup, and  I use my bike far more than any other mean of transportation in my everyday life.  

Why is conscious consumption so important?

Conscious consumption is the new vote. We have more power through our wallets than we do at the voting booth. We experience a global scenario where governments are sold to lobbies and those elected to defend the well-being of the population create legislation that only benefits a small elite of business owners — look at the liberation of pesticides in Brazil. When we practice conscious consumption, we show corporations what they have to do in order to keep deserving our money. This is in fact one of the main weapons for changing corporate production chains and the way they relate to the environment.

 You produced the webseries “Desafio Armário Cápsula” [Capsule Wardrobe Challenge] with the support of C&A. What are the benefits and the challenges that come with having a capsule wardrobe? 

A capsule wardrobe is an intelligent closet. With it, you waste much less time getting dressed, spend much less money, you aren’t a hostage to fashion and you get more creative putting your looks together. It helps you have only the things that you really love. Most women wear twenty per cent of their clothes eighty percent of the time, so why have so many clothes? I still keep my capsule wardrobe, and I intend to keep it for a long time because it is very freeing and functional. Everything matches everything and it adapts to my style.  

How do you imagine the future?

I imagine a future where human beings remember they are nature and understand that all beings inhabiting this planet are part of the web of life. We are not the only species here and we don’t have the right to dominate any other. This is why we have to rethink our decisions and really create a planet where abundance can be enjoyed by all. I imagine a future where we remember what it is to be human.

Porque é tão importante educar as pessoas sobre o problema do lixo?

Há um déficit de educação muito grande no Brasil e em vários lugares do mundo, e ainda temos um número enorme de analfabetos funcionais. Ao mesmo tempo, a indústria gasta bilhões em propaganda, incentivando as pessoas a consumirem mais e mais, porém elas não estão sendo educadas sobre o que acontece com todo esse lixo depois. O lixo é um problema ambiental seríssimo, portanto, se queremos que a vida no planeta floresça, precisamos repensar nossos hábitos e o que acontece no pós-consumo.  

Quais mudanças você fez na sua vida em prol da sustentabilidade?

Depois que comecei a estudar sobre o assunto, mudei tudo.  A principal mudança foi na minha profissão: virei ativista ambiental. Minha relação com a moda também mudou, e parei de acreditar no look do dia e de ser refém de tendências. Além disso, transformei meus hábitos alimentares, passei a comprar produtos de pequenos produtores, consumir orgânicos, carregar meu copo reutilizável e, no meu dia a dia, uso bem mais bicicleta do que qualquer outro meio de transporte.  

Porque o consumo consciente é tão importante?

Hoje o consumo consciente é o novo voto. Temos mais poder com a nossa carteira do que nas urnas. Vivemos um panorama mundial em que os governos estão vendidos para lobbies e as pessoas eleitas para advogar pelo bem-estar da população na verdade criam muitas leis que beneficiam uma pequena elite de empresários – vide a liberação de agrotóxicos no Brasil. Quando praticamos o consumo consciente mostramos para as empresas o que elas precisam fazer para continuar merecendo o nosso dinheiro, que é de fato uma das principais armas para mudar a cadeia produtiva das empresas e a relação delas com o meio ambiente.  

Você produziu a websérie “Desafio Armário Cápsula” com o apoio da C&A. Quais os benefícios e desafios de se ter um armário cápsula?

O armário cápsula é um guarda-roupa inteligente. Com ele você perde muito menos tempo se arrumando, gasta muito menos dinheiro, não fica refém da moda, e usa mais a criatividade para montar os looks. Ele te ajuda a ter só aquilo que você realmente ama. A maioria das mulheres usa vinte por cento de suas roupas em oitenta por cento do tempo, então por que ter tantas peças? Eu ainda mantenho meu armário-cápsula, e pretendo seguir com ele por um bom tempo por que é muito libertador e funcional, tudo combina com tudo e se adapta ao meu estilo.  

Como você imagina o futuro?

Eu imagino um futuro em que os seres humanos relembrem que são a natureza, e entendam que todos os seres que habitam esse planeta são parte da teia da vida. Somos só mais uma espécie aqui e não temos o direito de dominar nenhuma outra, por isso temos que repensar nossas decisões e de fato criar um planeta em que a abundância seja vivida por todos. Eu imagino um futuro em que a gente se lembre o que é ser humano.
