Creative Space: The ones that came before us

In a society that so often forgets the women who are its leading figures, the podcast “Escute as Mais Velhas” [Listen to Older Women] is a political and emotional gesture of remembrance. Created by Fundação Tide Setubal, produced by Rádio Novelo, and available on all major audio streaming platforms, the podcast revisits the memories of women who helped transform Brazil.
The first season, which premiered in March 2025, has thirteen episodes hosted by Sueli Carneiro and Neca Setubal. It brings together twelve different journeys marked by resistance, political articulation, and a forward-thinking view of the future. Conceição Evaristo, Benedita da Silva, Luiza Trajano, Leci Brandão, Jurema Werneck, Diva Moreira, Schuma Schumaher, Jacqueline Pitanguy, Branca Moreira Alves, Maria Malta Campos, Heloísa Teixeira, and Helena Theodoro speak in the first person about their own stories, through the eyes of those who hold the privilege of experience.
Schuma Schumaher, an educator and activist, is one of the leading advocates of intersectional feminism in Brazil, with a career focused on defending women’s rights across different realities. She worked for years as the coordinator of the NGO SOS Corpo and the Rede de Desenvolvimento Humano [Human Development Network] (REDEH), focusing on gender, education and public policy. Reflecting on her journey, she emphasizes the role of working as a collective: “My journey was inspired by many other women who came before me. It is important for young women to understand that we fight alongside others. If I am still here at 73, it is because I still believe. Because I dream that the next generation of women will be abused less, and respected more, and welcomed more.”
The importance of going through old age with dignity was highlighted by political scientist Diva Moreira in her episode. “Longevity cannot come without quality of life. We need to open our doors to the happiness hormones.” She also recalls the power of small lessons, like the one from an employer who taught her how to read and write when she was a girl, a key point in her story.
Sociologist Jacqueline Pitanguy acknowledged the role of memory and political participation: “My mother was the main voice that guided me. She was a cultured, gentle, and strict woman. It is crucial that we increase the presence of women in positions of power.”
For Branca Vianna, the director of Rádio Novelo, producing the series was a process marked by paying close attention. “The pace is set by the interviewers and the guest. It depends on each of their personalities, and this makes the entire series more interesting, because it is varied, different from one episode to the next,” she explains. She also points out that the main challenges were logistical, especially bringing everyone together in person in the studio. According to Branca, the editing process focused on eliminating repetition, checking information, and condensing the interviews, always taking care to preserve the strength and uniqueness of each interview.
More than just paying tribute, the program invites us to listen. Each episode is a reminder that transforming the present requires understanding who paved the way here, and how they did it. As Jaqueline states: “The new generations are the political protagonists of their time, not just spectators.”
By making the narratives of different trajectories, challenges, and achievements available in audio format, “Escute as Mais Velhas” sets up an archive that also serves as a beacon.
As que vieram antes
Em uma sociedade que tantas vezes esquece suas protagonistas, o podcast Escute as Mais Velhas é um gesto político e afetivo de lembrança. Criado pela Fundação Tide Setubal, produzido pela Rádio Novelo e disponível nas principais plataformas de áudio, o programa resgata memórias de mulheres que ajudaram a transformar o Brasil.
A primeira temporada, que estreou em março de 2025, tem treze episódios apresentados por Sueli Carneiro e Neca Setubal. Estão reunidas ali doze diferentes trajetórias marcadas pela resistência, articulação política e visão de futuro. As vozes de Conceição Evaristo, Benedita da Silva, Luiza Trajano, Leci Brandão, Jurema Werneck, Diva Moreira, Schuma Schumaher, Jacqueline Pitanguy, Branca Moreira Alves, Maria Malta Campos, Heloísa Teixeira e Helena Theodoro falam em primeira pessoa sobre suas próprias histórias, com o olhar de quem tem o privilégio da experiência.
Schuma Schumaher, educadora e ativista, é uma das principais articuladoras do feminismo interseccional no Brasil, com trajetória voltada à defesa dos direitos das mulheres em múltiplas realidades. Atuou por anos na coordenação da ONG SOS Corpo e na Rede de Desenvolvimento Humano (REDEH), com foco em gênero, educação e políticas públicas. Ao refletir sobre sua jornada, destaca o papel do trabalho coletivo: “Minha trajetória foi feita inspirada em muitas outras mulheres que vieram antes de mim. É importante que as jovens saibam que a luta se faz com as outras. Se aos 73 anos continuo aqui, é porque ainda acredito. Porque sonho que a próxima geração de mulheres será menos violentada, mais respeitada e mais acolhida”.
A importância de viver a velhice com dignidade foi algo destacado pela cientista política Diva Moreira em seu episódio. “A longevidade não pode vir sem qualidade de vida. Precisamos abrir as portas para os hormônios da felicidade.” Ela também relembra a força das pequenas lições, como a da patroa que a alfabetizou quando era menina, um ponto chave de sua história.
Já a socióloga Jacqueline Pitanguy destaca o papel da memória e da participação política: “Minha mãe foi a principal voz que me guiou. Uma mulher culta, suave e firme. É crucial aumentarmos a presença de mulheres nos espaços de poder”.
Para Branca Vianna, diretora da Rádio Novelo, produzir a série foi um processo marcado por atenção. “O ritmo é dado pelas entrevistadoras e pela convidada. Depende da personalidade de cada uma, e isso torna a série toda mais interessante, porque traz variedade e diferenças de um episódio para outro”, explica. Ela também aponta que os principais desafios foram logísticos, especialmente para reunir todas presencialmente em estúdio. Segundo Branca, o trabalho de edição buscou eliminar repetições, checar informações e condensar as entrevistas, sempre com o cuidado de preservar a força e a singularidade de cada fala.
Mais do que homenagear, o programa convoca à escuta. Cada episódio é um lembrete de que transformar o presente exige conhecer quem abriu os caminhos, e como isso foi feito. Como afirma Jaqueline: “As novas gerações são as protagonistas políticas de seu tempo, e não apenas espectadoras”.
Ao tornar audíveis as narrações de diferentes trajetórias, desafios e conquistas, o Escute as Mais Velhas cria um arquivo que também é um farol.
